Authorities are on the scene Wednesday morning after a crash involving a vehicle and cyclist that left the cyclist dead.
No one expected Meg Schwarzman to survive.

The city of Berkeley unveiled a new bike lane Thursday near the intersection where a woman on her bike was dragged and nearly killed during a crash in February. Last week, the motorist in that collision was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and causing great bodily injury. According to the police report, acquired by Berkeleyside through a Public Records Act request, Haynes had bought medical marijuana from a cannabis dispensary shortly before the crash. Update: 4:22 p.m. The driver of the smashed Corvette is Anthony Edward Torpey, 21, of
Dublin,Castro Valley, according to Officer Jenn Coats, Berkeley Police spokeswoman. He was arrested at 3:52 a.m. and was taken to Berkeley Jail, where he is being held on $91,200 bail, according to police records. In addition to being held on a DUI charge and a felony hit-and-run charge, he was arrested on suspicion of driving with a suspended license.
Update, Aug. 12: Authorities have ruled that the accident was due to a right-of-way violation caused by the cyclist. Said Officer Jennifer Coats, Berkeley Police spokeswoman, the boy rode his bicycle off the sidewalk and into traffic in the roadway, where he was struck immediately by an oncoming vehicle.
Update, July 17: The pedestrian killed was identified by the Alameda County coroner’s office as John Patrick Miller, 46. No residence was provided. He died of “extensive blunt trauma.”
A Berkeley man is in critical condition after being struck by a car while walking on University Avenue just west of San Pablo Avenue on Tuesday night, authorities said.
