Just weeks after an agender student was set on fire in Oakland while riding an AC Transit bus, the Berkeley Unified School District has adopted new policies to protect those who are transgender, gender fluid, or do not identify as male or female.
Supporters of Sasha Fleischman, the 18-year-old Maybeck High School student who was set fire to while riding an AC Transit bus on Nov. 4, are planning a solidarity march tonight, Thursday Nov. 14, on MacArthur Boulevard in Oakland. The group plans to tie rainbow ribbons to bus poles to add to those already placed there in recent days.
Many students and staff at Berkeley’s Maybeck High School wore skirts today to show their solidarity for fellow student Luke “Sasha” Fleischman, whose skirt was set on fire as the 18-year-old slept on a bus on Monday.
The Alameda County District Attorney has charged 16-year-old Richard Thomas for a hate crime, along with aggravated mayhem and felony assault, for setting fire to 18-year-old Berkeley student Luke “Sasha” Fleischman on an AC Transit bus on Monday.
